Set clear goals Put together a list of goals that motivate you. These can be small goals or big goals – it’s good to have a mix of both. Have an essay that you need to get done for an assignment? Rather than having ‘write the essay’ as a goal, break it down into smaller chunks. Your goal for the first day might be to select readings you want to reference. Then, the next time you sit down to study, your task could be to pull key points out of the readings. And bit by bit, you’ll get the essay complete.
The biggest difference I’ve noticed between successful people and unsuccessful people isn’t intelligence or opportunity or resources. It’s the belief that they can make their goals happen. We all deal with vulnerability, uncertainty, and failure. Some of us trust that if we move forward anyway, then we will figure it out. I didn’t have anyone to learn from, but I trusted that I would figure it out anyway. When I was kicked off a train in the middle of the night while traveling through Hungary, I was lost and confused. I couldn’t find anyone who spoke English, so as the train pulled away I ran along side, hopped back on, and trusted that I would figure it out anyway.
One of the most effective study motivation tips is creating a realistic study schedule that you can stick to. Don’t think of studying as different from any other activity. Plan your schedule like you would if you were making time for any other important activity in your life. Get organised and plan time to study each subject separately, and try to stick to this schedule as closely as possible. A well-structured routine can help you improve your self-discipline and ensure that studying becomes a regular part of your day.
Where you study can play a huge role in how motivated and productive you are during your study sessions. Studying in a dim, messy room can make your mind feel cluttered and will make you easily distracted. Instead, try to create a space that’s quiet, well-lit and free from distractions. A change of scenery can also help. Some students like to get out of the house and study in the library or a café. If you’re a homebody, however, a cosy (but tidy!) corner at home will do the trick. Experiment with different settings to discover what works best for you and helps you stay focused.
